Gender studies is important and well-recognized field of study. It trains students to improve their social analysis skills. Banning gender studies program is not only a threat to academic freedom, but also a great loss for the country and society by depriving women and men to enrich their knowledge to improve people's participation in society in a more meaningful way.

That the Hungarian government presumes to decide what degree programmes are and are not to be taught at a university is an outrage. To do so not only imposes a political ideology on universities (in itself unacceptable) but also inevitably damages the academic credibility of the Hungarian academic sector.

In the past I have collaborated with researchers and teachers from the Gender Studies program. I think the program is excellent and I have advised former students of mine to participate at the CEU gender studies program, because of its quality. I sincerely hope that the program is continued for future students to participate in.

I am a University Teacher. Gender Studies are a well-established and fruitful field of study. Moreover, any attempt of a gouvernment to ban or discriminate against a certain discipline is an attack on academic freedom. Researchers, teachers and universities must have the right to research and teach according to their own methods and research agenda. If this is not granted, not only academic freedom, but also democracy is in danger.

I am signing because as a senior researcher and a woman I can see every day the difficulties which female scholars face in East Central Europe, being only a minority among scholars. More than fifty percent of university students in East-Central Europe are women and it is important for me that my female students can hope for equal chances and see they are valued as researchers. After all, it has been a century since East-Central Europe produced a fantastic scholar - Marie Sklodowska Curie. East Central European women deserve to be given equal chances for the benefit of their whole societies. Otherwise, we are all losing. Gender Studies provide analytical research of these circumstances and to endanger them means to endanger the freedom of critical thinking.

Gender studies is a crucial academic field to understand not only gender as a powerdynamic but also how it intersects woth other categorizations that hinder people in fulfilling their lives.

As a cultural anthropologist and longtime gender studies scholar and teacher, I am appalled by this decision in Hungary, which sets back both scholarship and academic freedom immeasurably. Gender studies has become a well-established and necessary field that addresses a fundamental form of social difference and inequality recognized worldwide by social scientists. Gender studies must be maintained and enabled to thrive.

I see no reason whatsoever why governments should stifle research and debate on this important issue, or indeed on any issue.

I believe that it is necessary to educate all generations, and the young one especially, about the conditions of women and men in our society, both of past and present as a means to achieve gender equality necessary for functioning and prosperous democracy. 21. century should learn from humanity mistakes and injustice of the past, and finally become a proper example for the future generations.

It is fundamental to the advancement of humanity to provide eduction on and within Gender Studies. Students must have access to knowledge that empowers their individual growth so then can contribute to the larger communities they belong to.
